"In peaceful calm, void and emptiness,
The authentic qi flows easily.
Essences and spirits are kept within.
How could illness arise?"

Neijing Suwen

“The law of Yin and Yang is the natural order of the universe,
the foundation of all things,
Mother of all changes, the root of life and death.”

The Yellow Emperor

“From ancient times it has been recognised that there is an
intimate relationship between activity and life of human beings
and their natural environment.”

The Yellow Emperor

“Where there is no movement there is pain.
Where there is movement there is no pain.”

Traditional Chinese proverb

Acupuncture has been used for over two thousand years and is recognised around the world for its many health benefits. Unlike many modern health practices, it treats the body as a whole, not just a single illness, and emphasises the connection between mental and physical health. Each patient is unique and receives a bespoke treatment according to their specific combination of symptoms.

In ancient China it was believed that a person in good health had an abundance of Qi (vital energy) and that it was flowing well throughout the body. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the body at specific points which then affect the flow of your body’s Qi. It is also very effective in releasing tension as well as stimulating the release of the body’s natural hormones and chemicals.

In our hectic modern lives, Qi can easily become depleted or even stuck causing a blockage. Acupuncture helps to return the body’s equilibrium and the flow of Qi. This is why patients often notice a general feeling of improved well-being as well as a reduction in their symptoms.

Your treatment will always start with a consultation period where we will discuss your symptoms.

In your first appointment this consultation can be up to an hour long as we also need to discuss your medical history. This is because Chinese medicine treats the root cause of the problem and not just the current presenting symptoms.

In follow up appointments the consultation period will be much shorter – usually 45 mins.

Andrea will take your pulses (3 main positions on each wrist in Chinese medicine) as well as look at your tongue. These are further diagnostic tools to make sure Andrea is treating your symptoms with the most appropriate acupuncture points.

Treatment will take place on a couch, either supine or prone depending on the treatment.

The needles will be in place for around 20 mins during which time Andrea will remain in the room, but you will be encouraged to relax and be quiet.

Following treatment, you should make sure you drink plenty of water for the rest of the day and if possible try avoiding doing anything of high intensity such as a heavy gym session.

Click on the links below and you will be redirected to the British Acupuncture Council’s webpage for each ailment. There you will find a short western explanation of the illness as well as how acupuncture can help. There are also links to research trials that have been carried out to test the effects of acupuncture for each problem.

Even if your condition is not list Acupuncture can bring your body back to balance, either to combat the condition, or to help you manage the symptoms.

If you would like to discuss, please contact Andrea.
